From a commercial standpoint, the event hadn't been a success. Id read the Death of WCW book and thought Id check it out. Souled Out was a professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) event promoted by World Championship Wrestling (WCW) in January from 1997 through 2000. Souled Out posted a 0.45 buyrate, the worst of 1997. Sadly, nWo Souled Out on January 25th, 1997 was a miserable failure, and actually posted one of WCW's lower buyrates all year. The nWo referee, Nick Patrick, officiated all the matches. WCW president/nWo member Eric Bischoff and Ted DiBiase provided commentary. Hopes were high that an entire Pay-Per-View based around the infinite drawing power of the New World Order could top that. Souled Out 1997, and also known as nWo Souled Out, took place on Janufrom the Five Seasons Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.This was an nWo sponsored PPV, all of the matches were nWo versus WCW. Starrcade 1996 had pulled a buyrate of 0.95.
For this reason, Bischoff decided to promote a January Pay-Per-View dedicated to the faction. After all, nWo merchandise was the biggest seller, and fans saw the renegade group as cooler than their WCW counterparts. The event was originally conceived in 1997 as a New World Order exclusive pay-per-view.
